1 June 2017 – Benalla Aviation Museum – Tiger Moth Restoration update
The museum is restoring to static display a de Havilland Tiger Moth, purchased after being written off after a crash. It is being restored to static as a memorial display in remembrance of the pilots who trained at Benalla, their instructors and support staff.
It will never fly again but at least it will be appreciated. The Tiger Moth has been a long project, but it has been coming along very well of late with all hands working on it at the moment.
After the crash, the forward fuselage required a full rebuild, with all the metal tubing replaced and all the timberwork made from scratch, a lot of work.
It has been very helpful that many of our volunteers have the skills to be able to do it. Sheet aluminium is been fixed by rolling, hammering it back out, replacing where needed. Along with the fabric covering, the engine has been rebuilt to running condition, which we will run a display and and fly-in days.
A huge help was a donation from a gentleman from Queensland whose father was a wartime instructor at 11 EFTS. This enabled us to acquire pristine but unairworthy wings for the Tiger. There’s light at the end of the tunnel for this project as the Tiger is taking shape to be presented as a typical all-yellow Benalla wartime trainer.
